Vernal Pools – Friday 4 Kids

Leanna O’Grady shared the excitement of Vernal Pools, also called ephemeral pools, are seasonal pools of water that provide habitat for distinctive plants and animals. Vernal Pools dry up during the year. Wood frogs, Salamanders (among others) lay their eggs here where fish can’t eat them. Tonight (might be one of the few nights in the annual spring amphibian migration of Spotted Salamanders & Wood Frog: they are crossing the roads that divide the forest where they spend the winter and the vernal pools where they lay eggs. Look out for them! and those protecting them! Drive slow. See the DEC website for more information on how to volunteer to help.

Thanks to the Columbia County Soil & Water District for these exciting programs that interest our young people.
